What is Western Style Square Dancing? Well, you might think it is what you learned back in grade school, and although its origins are the same, it is quite different. You probably only learned a handfull of calls and you probably didn't learn them dancing to a live caller. In Western Style Square Dancing, you can start out with a basic set of a few dozen calls, and build upwards from there. A live caller gives the calls, and helps the dancers if there are problems. Western Style Square Dancing is great exercise, and a healthy, wholesome activity.
How do I learn to square dance? You go to weekly lessons sponsored by an area square dance club. The lessons are not all work - they're lots of fun! You'll meet new people and make new friends while you're learning. While you are taking lessons, you'll be invited to special "class" dances sponsored by other clubs in the area, so that you can meet some of the people taking square dance lessons at other area clubs. You'll also get a chance to hear other callers.
What about when the lessons are over? After you graduate, you'll be able to attend any "mainstream" level dance in the world! Yes, even in other countries, square dancing is all in English. If you like to travel, you can find square dances in the places you visit, and meet people in those areas. You can also attend regional, national, and internation conventions where thousands of dancers gather to hear the best callers, meet each other, and make new friends.
What next? Click on the "Area Fun Nights" button above, and find a lesson that is close to you and meets your schedule. Attend a free fun night to get a lesson in the basics, and to start meeting new people right away! If you have any questions, feel free to contact any of the people listed.
